Roman De Angelis and The Heart of Racing's No. 23 Aston Martin Valkyrie were back in action at the famed Laguna Seca raceway for the TireRack.com Monterey Sportscar Championship in the IMSA WeatherTech series with a 10th-place finish.
The weekend activities kicked off Friday with De Angelis and teammate Ross Gunn qualifying the No. 23 Aston Martin Valkyrie in strong eleventh position for the main event.
De Angelis started the race, navigating through the field in the first 2 hours and 40 minutes, bringing the No. 23 up to fifth position. Unfortunately, contact caused damage to the left rear tire, forcing De Angelis down the pit lane for repairs and putting the team one lap down. Gunn took the wheel of the Valkyrie during the pit stop for the remainder of the event, rebounding to a tenth-place position.
"I think the weekend as a whole went quite well," said De Angelis. "On a personal level it was my first qualifying in the GTP so that was a great experience that went quite well. I think we were as close to the front as we've been during the race. I thought the first half of the race went according to plan and the pace was competitive. We had some contact with a GT that caused a tire puncture and put us out of contention for a top seven or eight. Ross did a great job to keep us where we were, but now we are looking forward to Detroit." (courtesy of The Heart of Racing)
